The Wrestling Curmudgeon on ZaRuca

I just love Pro Wrestling and one of the things I like about it is watching young talents reach their potential. Two such talents are Sol Ruca and Zaria.

They are now the talk of World Wrestling Entertainment’s NXT brand as a breakup of their popular union may be forthcoming.

It looks like the breakup is put on hold now as the duo seemed to hug it out after Ruca confronted the stable Fatal Influence and was attacked. Zaria put aside her frustrations and saved her friend Ruca. Through a series of events, Ruca is slated to meet NXT Women’s Champion Jacy Jayne, with the title on the line.

ZaRuca took very different paths to the WWE. Ruca had zero Pro Wrestling experience before being signed. She was a tumbling and gymnastics phenomenon at the University of Oregon. The Australian born Zaria made a name for herself on the local wrestling scene and became one its brightest stars. Ruca debuted in NXT in 2023 and showed great promise with a high-flying style and didn’t miss a beat after a leg injury. Zaria debuted soon after with much fanfare and was impressed with her look and power-based wrestling.

They became a team and their styles meshed well and became a treat to all titles. This was proven to be true when Ruca won both the Women’s North American and Speed Titles in short order, the Tag-team titles seemed a lock but that’s when the trouble began.

They won a title shot against the then-champion The Judgement Day in a Fatal-Four Way at Evolution. They seemed ready to take the titles, but a failed double team on Alexa Bliss led to failure. They had a second chance at the title when they took on new champs Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss on Smackdown, but an untimely distraction by Blake Monroe in the audience seat gave Flair a chance to re-injure Ruca’s leg which led to their defeat. Ruca lost both titles whilst Zaria failed to defend the North American title against Monroe and the Speed Title was vacated. Zaria’s frustration of failing to win a title of her own seems to grow.

After Ruca recovered, a final chance at Tag-Team gold came against the Elegance Brand for the TNA Knockouts Tag-Team title. Once again, the title was within their reach, but Ruca went for her spectacular ‘The Soul Stacher’ finish. She hit Zaria instead of Heather by Elegance, and they lost, again.

Zaria seemed to have had enough. She decided to go after the NXT Women’s Championship held by Jacy Jayne. Her wish didn’t come true. A tag match was set up between Zaria and Sol against Wern Sinclar and Kendal Grey with the winner of the fall getting the title shot. Sinclar and Grey showed fine teamwork and almost won, but Ruca got the pin and she won the title shot against Jacey Jayne, even though Zaria was the one trying to win the fall. That seemed to tear the team apart.

ZaRuca may be over, but after the last NXT show, peace and friendship seems to win over frustrations and jealousy. Or is this all a set up for Zaria to turn on Ruca? Whatever happens, it has been a wild ride for this team.
