The Wrestling Curmudgeon On Giulia

At this year’s NXT’s ‘New Year’s Evil’, the ‘Beautiful Madness’ Giulia ended the long reign of Roxanne Perez to become the NXT Women’s champion.

It was an awesome ascent by the Japanese star to the title. It can be said it was steady and sure as she zeroed in on the title chase, and we were ready for the title to change hands.

Giulia was the one who could do it.

WWE hyped her from the beginning when the cutie-meanie Perez had become the unbreakable champion who seemed sure to turn back all challengers no matter what. Giulia made her wrestling debut smoking Chelsea Green, the future US Women’s champion, but lost her first title bid when Perez’s friend Cora Jade returned to help protect the title on the CW NXT premier. Perez looked like she could hold the title longer, but that’s when the real chase began.

Guilia teamed up with fellow new signing and rival ‘The Dark Angel’ Stephane Vaquer to defeat Jade and Perez at Halloween Havoc. It was a solid match that showed Jade and Perez as the villains they are, but the Giulia and Vaquer pair lived up to the hype as the ballyhooed free agent signings they are.
Giulia’s already soaring stock became best selling when she won the Women’s Iron Survivor Challenge at Deadline. A gurling twenty-five minutes match with four other wrestlers who Giulia outlasted the competition which sets up a rematch with Perez for New Year’s Evil.

At this point, it had become clear that Giulia had to be one to dethrone Perez. Although Vaquer and another debut, Zaria also gained pinfall wins over Perez too. After all, they were both in the field at Deadline which gave Giulia’s victory even more credibility.

The big match was all that it was supposed to be. Perez confidently jumped on Giulia to try to retain her title, but the Beautiful Maddess gained the advantage. Jade once again tried to turn the tide back for Perez but got thrown out for her trouble. Giulia was able to land her big knee lift with a suplex finisher, scored the win and won the NXT Women’s title. Her chase made her the fourth woman of Japanese descent to rise to the Championship.

While Giulia has not made a title defense yet, she is on a path where she would team with Bayley to hold off the challenge of Jade and Perez to protect her hard-won title. And now it has been announced that she will defend her title against Bayley. That clash should be amazing.

Giulia now must prove she can carry a title on US soil as well as she did in Japan. A match with Vaquer would be great, but she seems on a path to challenge Women’s North American Champion Fallon Henley. But I hope we will get a Giulia vs Vaquer match in the future.

Giulia does have the appearance and the ability to be a great champion. All the awards and praises she has got are well-deserved, but she does have to prove that she is a champion and able to get promoted to the main roster soon.

I am eagerly awaiting to see what this title reign will bring for Giulia and all fans of NXT and wrestling.
